The official flag of Puerto Rico was adopted in 1952 (on the same day that Puerto Rico's status was changed from a territory to a commonweath). The actual origins of the current Puerto Rican flag are uncertain. There are two competing beliefs; some people think the flag was created by Manuel de Besosa and sewn by his daughter, Mima; others think that the flag was designed by Antonia Velez Alvarado and made by Micaela Dalmau de Carreras.
The flag of Puerto Rico has 5 equal horizontal bands, three are red and two are white; a blue isosceles triangle anchored on the hoist side has a large white star.
The Puerto Rican flag is the most widely recognized symbol of Puerto Rico. Many Puerto Ricans, both on the island and elsewhere, proudly fly or display it as a symbol of their beloved island.
